Chestnuts

Chestnut is a valuable fruit for our body, because apart from its deliciousness it has much to offer.

Unlike other nuts and seeds, chestnuts are relatively "poor" in calories. They contain little fat, but are rich in minerals, vitamins and phytonutrients that are health-promoting, mainly containing starch, as opposed to other seeds and fruits that are high in protein and fat. Their nutritional composition is similar to that of other important starch foods such as sweet potatoes, sweet corn, potatoes etc. They are also good sources of inorganic salts, vitamins and good quality protein. It is a good source of dietary fiber: It provides 8.1 g . (about 21% of the required daily quantity) per 100 grams. dietary fiber helps reduce cholesterol levels in the blood, limiting excessive absorption of cholesterol from the intestine.

Chestnuts are distinguished from other fruits and seeds for their distinctive dietary profile, are extremely rich in vitamin C (100g provide 43mg of vitamin C or 72% of the recommended daily amount). Vitamin C is essential for the formation of bones, teeth and blood vessels, also a powerful antioxidant that offers protection from harmful free radicals.

Chestnuts like green leafy vegetables, chestnuts are rich in folic acid, which is an important ingredient of fruits and seeds. For example, 100 g walnuts provide 62 mg of folate or 15.5% of the recommended daily amount. Folic acid is necessary for the formation of red blood cells, the synthesis of DNA. Adequate consumption of folic acid-rich foods also helps prevent nerve abnormalities in the fetus. It is a rich source of monounsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid and palmitoleic acid. Studies have shown that monounsaturated fats in the diet help reduce both total and LDL (bad cholesterol) and increase HDL (good cholesterol) in the blood. The Mediterranean diet, which is rich in dietary fiber, monounsaturated fats, omega fatty acids and antioxidants, helps prevent coronary heart disease and strokes.

The chestnuts are an excellent source of metals such as iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc and provide a very good amount of potassium (518 mg / 100 g). Potassium regulates the heart rate and reduces blood pressure, iron helps to prevent anemia and magnesium and phosphorus are important components of metabolism and bones also are rich in B vitamins. 100 g, provide 11 % of the recommended daily amount of niacin, 29% pyridoxine (vitamin B6), 100% thiamine and 12% riboflavin
